Note the total length of a UMS sensor on your order

On an order, please note the total length of the Tensiometer (except T5), pore water sampler or SIS probe together with the article number, but not the shaft length.

Example:
  • Sampling depth = 60 cm
  • Length of the shaft end to stick out of the ground = 10 cm
  • Add half of the cup length which is defined as the sampling depth: e.g. 6 cm cup length = 3 cm
Total length = 10 cm + 60 cm + 3 cm = 73 cm

If the probe is installed in an angle, the total length is calculated as:

Sampling depth / cos(alpha) + half the cup + over ground part with alpha = the angle to the vertical.

Example:
  • Angle to the vertical: = 20°
  • Sampling depth = 60 cm
  • Length of the shaft end to stick out of the ground = 10 cm
Total length (20°) = 60 cm/0,94 + 3 cm + 10 cm = 76,8 cm

With pore water samplers it often is recommendable that the shaft ends approximately 15 cm below the soil surface. Then, the suction tube which is lead to the sampling bottle is buried in a depth of 10 cm.

The shaft length is not part of the order number. To find out the shaft length of the different sensors have a look at the table below:

Note that for T5 still the shaft length needs to be indicated.
